The capital of Paraná, Curitiba, is yet another Brazilian city that may soon be able to accept bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as tax payments.
The idea was presented last Thursday (13) by Councilor Noemia Rocha (MDB-PR), who was inspired by Rio de Janeiro to present her project.
According to Noemia, Curitiba can assess the adoption of cryptocurrencies as a tax payment, with the project idea being a suggestion to be reviewed by the college of mayor and aldermen.
“The following suggestion should be forwarded to the executive branch: studies and arrangements for receiving ‘cryptocurrency assets’, through the accreditation of specialized companies, for the payment of municipal taxes.”
What is the justification for Curitiba to accept bitcoin for tax payments?
When El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as legal tender, an event in Curitiba invited the country’s minister to explain the fundamentals that led to such a move.
Now, a Curitiba councilor has presented a suggestive and non-immanding bill regarding bitcoin, which can be adopted as a means of payment in the city.
The justification, according to Noemia Rocha, who is out of her third consecutive term, is that cryptocurrencies have already become financial assets of immense worldwide popularity, as alternatives to the currency’s nationalization.
Since Curitiba is an innovative city, it would be important to study the feasibility of taking new financial forms in its ecosystem.
“Cryptocurrencies have become financial assets of immense popularity in the global economy and are already alternative forms to the ‘nationalization of currencies’, as can be seen in the numerous operations carried out through the virtual environment. Curitiba, as we know, is a pioneer of technological innovation actions and mechanisms, including a dedicated center for the study and development of advanced technology, such as the ‘Vale do Pinhão’.”
Rio de Janeiro inspires cryptocurrency change and adoption
The Curitiba councilor stated that her suggestion was inspired by Rio de Janeiro, which should accept cryptocurrencies for payment from IPTU by 2023.
“The suggestion presented here follows an initiative already adopted by the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro/RJ, which recently authorized the accreditation of specialized companies to implement the conversion of ‘cryptocurrency assets’ into ‘currency’ to facilitate payment of real estate taxes in Territorial Urbano (IPTU) for the fiscal year 2023.”
Since Rio is an important city in Brazil, Noemia Rocha believes that the proposal should be considered by Curitiba, whose structure can be adapted to new financial forms.
“So, and because of the precedent already adopted by such an important municipality in the federation, and given the already consolidated structure of the municipality of Curitiba, in addition to the necessary updating and modernization of the tax collection instruments, striving for rationality, efficiency and focused on technological adequacy, is that we formulate this proposition in the form of a Suggestion to the Executive for the preparatory measures that prove necessary.”
The bill will be voted symbolically and in one round next week, with the suggestions not imposed on the executive. In other words, it’s up to the mayor of Curitiba to accept the idea or not.
Anyway, the onset of discussions about adopting bitcoin and cryptocurrencies is reaching yet another important Brazilian capital.
