The Ministry of Education (MEC) recognized higher education in cryptocurrencies and blockchain through the new list of technologist courses. With this, universities that already present content about the technologies can be better guided.
The recognition in question came with the update of the National Catalog of Higher Technology Courses (CNCST), in 2022. The latest version dates from 2016 and still did not formally recognize the technologies.
It is worth remembering that several undergraduate and graduate courses already offer studies on cryptocurrencies, bitcoin and blockchain as a topic of interest to society.
Cryptocurrencies and blockchain are recognized by the MEC, what changes?
Relatively new topic for many people in Brazil, the teaching of blockchain and cryptocurrencies in colleges across the country is growing.
And economist Maurício Eliseu Costa Romão, from the Secretariat of Vocational and Technological Education of the Ministry of Education (Setec/MEC) has analyzed the inclusion of the themes in the CNCST 2022. The rapporteur’s vote was in favor of including not only cryptocurrencies in the catalog, but several other themes.
In the case of cryptocurrencies, they were included in the convergence table, in the “Financial Management” topic, as “Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies and Finance in the Digital Age”.
Furthermore, in the topic “Information security” “Blockchain and digital encryption” were also typed.
That is, colleges and other higher education institutions now have a guide to create courses in the industry.
Listed courses are regulated and can receive ENADE ratings
The measures approved by the MEC, published last Wednesday (7) in the Official Journal of the Union (DOU), can still receive funds in 30 days. In any case, it updates the catalog of higher education courses regulated in Brazil.
With regulations, it is common for the Department of Education to define a minimum course workload as well as the basic infrastructure for course operation.
The operation of technologist courses received its first regulation in 2006 and is now present in several educational institutions throughout Brazil.
With the inclusion of cryptocurrencies, it is possible for the MEC to carry out the National Student Assets Survey (Enade) among the students of the courses. Education regulations and supervision also take the catalog into account in their actions.
Recently, USP students won a cryptocurrency competition with a balanced portfolio analysis, indicating that the topic is already a reality in Brazilian education as young students show increasing interest in the sector.
In addition, the regulation of cryptocurrencies was approved by the National Congress and is awaiting presidential approval. For example, more education initiatives should emerge in Brazil in the coming years, with the recognition of MEC as a next step.
