Polygon invests in Brazil by opening the first TechHouse in Rio de Janeiro

Last Wednesday, in partnership with the NGO Educar+, Rede Polygon, Ethereum’s main layer 2 blockchain, inaugurated its first TechHouse, its first investment in Brazil.

Developed to bring blockchain to places not yet accessible, the action aims to promote digital inclusion projects, such as those of Educar+, which has included web3 and new technologies in its curriculum since 2021.

Polygon’s first TechHouse is located in the Final Feliz favela, in Complexo do Chapadão, in Rio de Janeiro.

How does the TechHouse opened by Rede Polygon in Brazil work?

The TechHouse operates as a social informatics laboratory that will be used to teach students of technology courses, education classes, such as literacy and arts, who will this year integrate education with technologies, audiovisual and community-based.

For Carol Santos, CEO and founder of Educar+, the partnership has the potential to bring Web3 to more people.

“Our goal is to make the decentralization of the web come true3, which is why it cannot be available only to those with purchasing power. To be truly decentralized, the blockchain has to reach the communities, it has to be on the hills and on the tarmac, it has to be in the hand of a periphery as well as in the hand of an executive.”

The Social Informatics Laboratory is an old dream of the NGO, which previously used second-hand computers donated by schools and lacked the structure to expand engineering classes. With ImpactPlus, the social arm of the Polygon Network, the NGO is well equipped to serve students and the community.

Students learn from basic computing to metaverse programming

In total, the NGO received eight computer kits, consisting of a monitor, mouse, CPU, keyboard, telephone, table, chair, webcam, as well as a data show and room renovation. The technology grid of Educar+, the main pillar of TechHouse, has two projects with three classes each, Era Digital and Web3Favela.

Era Digital is aimed at teaching basic computing and serving children and teens, and last year it started a special class with mothers of students. In addition, Web3Favela, an education project on Web3 for peripheral youth, aims to provide opportunities for social transformation through blockchain technology.

According to Carol from Educar+, students in the new space will be able to program in the metaverse, among other things.

“The TechHouse will be a space that takes the student from basic computing to the experience of developing projects in the metaverse, for example with The Sandbox and Vox Edit. We will be able to experiment with games, use different platforms, the possibilities are endless.”

All projects provide personal development, educational assistance and improvement of the vocational curriculum.

Finally, they encourage students to develop technology solutions for the community. It is worth remembering that the lab also acts in the training of young talents and offers training for those who want to specialize in web3 and blockchain technologies.

Polygon is a toolkit of layer 2 scaling solutions built for Ethereum. This allows developers to create scalable and user-friendly sidechains, scaling solutions or dApps. In addition, the ecosystem’s cryptocurrency, MATIC, is the tenth largest by market capitalization of the cryptocurrency market.
