The International Criminal Police Organization, known as Interpol, will explore how the organization can monitor crime in the metaverse. Jürgen Stock, Secretary General of Interpol, told the BBC. What is this crime and how can Interpol, which operates in 195 countries, play a role in it?
Executive Law in the Metaverse
Over time, the metaverse – the concept of digital universes – takes shape. Its popularity is increasing and that also means that more and more users are accessing it. This brings opportunities, but also problems.
Cryptocurrencies are used in some metaverses. This gives criminals a reason to enter those areas as well. There is money they can take from users. According to Stock, it is therefore important that the agency does not fall behind. Therefore, Interpol will deal with this branch of the Internet.
“Criminals are sophisticated and adept at adapting very quickly to every new technological tool available to commit crimes,” said Stock. “We have to respond adequately to this. Sometimes legislators, police and society lag behind.”
“We saw that if we do this too late, it already undermines trust in the tools we use and therefore in the Metaverse. Criminals use it on similar platforms that already exist.”
But what is a crime in the metaverse?
Dr. Madan Oberoi, Executive Director of Technology and Innovation, can tell us more about the definition of crime in the metaverse. There are some recording issues. “There are crimes that I don’t know if they can still be called crimes or not,” he said.
“For example, cases of sexual harassment have been reported. If you look at the definitions of these crimes in physical space and try to apply them to the metaverse, there’s a catch. We don’t know if we can call them crimes or not, but these threats certainly exist, so these issues have yet to be addressed.”
One of Interpol’s biggest challenges will be to raise awareness about the issue. “My example is that if you have to save a drowning person, you have to be able to swim,” he said. “Similarly, if law enforcement is going to help people who have been injured in the metaverse, they need to know what the metaverse is all about. That’s one of our goals: to get the police to use the Metaverse and become aware of it.
