Hong Kong Counts Simpsons Episode on “Bitcoin and Labor Camps”

Disney has removed one of the latest episodes of The Simpsons for its subscribers in Hong Kong. While some claim this is government censorship, others report it was Disney’s own choice, concerned with pleasing the Chinese market.

Called One Angry Lisa (An Angry Lisa, in literal translation), episode 2 of the 34th season mentions Bitcoin miners and forced labor camps as Marge Simpson participates in a virtual cycling class, with the Great Wall of China in the background.

While no such episode is yet available on Disney streaming services in Brazil, the case was widely commented on by the international media.

Simpsons is controversial for criticizing China and is censored

While Disney wants to monetize the world’s most populous country, China, not all creators seem to agree with that idea. One of the most recent episodes of The Simpsons, which appeared last October, has led to criticism of the Asian country.

As Marge virtually walks the Great Wall of China, her instructor ridicules the wonders of the country, citing Bitcoin miners and child labor.

“See the wonders of China. Bitcoin mines, forced labor camps where children make smartphones.”

According to the international media, this episode was censored in Hong Kong, a Chinese-controlled region. That is, even if Hong Kong has a minimum of independence, Disney chose to remove the lines so as not to be reprimanded by the Chinese government.

The Simpsons and cryptocurrencies

This is not the first time The Simpsons has talked about Bitcoin. In an April 2021 episode, the series pointed out that the price of the largest cryptocurrency in the market would become “infinite” while stocks of companies like Fox were low.

In another episode airing in February 2020, Bart Simpson claims that the price of the Ripple cryptocurrency (XRP) would reach $589 by the end of the year. The prediction has clearly failed to materialize as XRP is only worth $0.40 at the time of writing.

Finally, the creators of The Simpsons need to keep up with the cryptocurrency market to quote them so often. Unfortunately, Hong Kongers may never see the last mention of Bitcoin due to censorship.
