The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has subpoenaed Google to release access credentials for a link allegedly sponsored by Lula’s campaign in the 2022 election after former President Jair Bolsonaro’s campaign captured evidence on blockchain.
The case concerns a possible misunderstanding by Lula and Alckmin’s campaign during the elections. In submitting the request for views, Bolsonaro’s coalition “joined blockchain certified documentdated 10/10/2022, from which, in his opinion, it appears that there was indeed traffic guidance, via Google advertisements, for the benefit of the application under investigation”.
Minister Benedito Gonçalves, who works at the TSE and STJ, is in charge of analyzing the case.

Analyzing the request of Jair Bolsonaro’s campaign, the TSE minister understood that the proofs with blockchain registration helped to display the paid advertisements. However, he understood that such evidence was still fragile, since Art. 26, § 2 of law 9.504/97 allows expenditure on advertising.
The publication promoted by Lula on Google Ads led readers to a publication on his own website, to the page “Is Lula innocent? We call VAR to record”.
On January 17, 2023, the Minister of TSE asked Google to clarify, among other information, how many people clicked on the promoted link.
The process highlighting the use of blockchain technology as evidence in an election dispute for the President of the Republic in Brazil is not yet over and is still being analyzed.
For example, last Friday (10) the TSE asked the Electoral Public Ministry to review the process. In any case, the case remains close to an outcome.
If the coalitions are interested in commenting on the action, the space remains open for demonstrations.
Blockchain technology in the spotlight
Blockchain technology is a pinnacle in information capture security because of its distributed and immutable design. So Brazil already sees innovation as essential to keep documents safe, in a digital environment with increasing challenges.
Blockchain stores information in blocks that are linked in a chain. Each block contains a list of transactions, as well as a unique “hash” that links that block to the previous block in the chain.
This makes it difficult for hackers to change or erase information recorded on the blockchain, as it would require changing all subsequent blocks in the chain, which is computationally difficult.
In addition, information stored on blockchain remains registered on various nodes around the world, making it even more difficult for hackers to access all copies of the information.
Finally, Bitcoin is the first digital currency to reveal the potential of blockchain in the world and is considered a safe currency by the internet.
