With more than 1,700 subscribers to an open letter calling for artificial intelligence testing to be suspended, including Elon Musk and Ripple CEO Chris Larsen, experts are calling for no system more advanced than ChatGPT 4 to be trained.
Available at the Future of Life Institute, the letter from several AI professors and scientists seeks to curb technological progress without rules.
“We are urging all AI labs to immediately stop training on AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least 6 months.”
AI threats pose serious risks to society and humanity at the current stage, according to the letter. Several artificial intelligence technology research labs agree and sign the letter.
Pause in AI research must be public and verifiable, reads call to letter signed by Elon Musk and CEO of Ripple
In the open letter to the public, several technology entrepreneurs, billionaires, cryptocurrency fans, among others, are concerned about an evolution of AI that is not open and controlled, i.e. the so-called black boxes.
The fear includes AI tests that could affect or endanger humanity’s quality of life.
Despite this, laboratories researching AI should not completely stop their studies on the technology, but be careful that projects do not lose control.
“This is not a pause in AI development in general, but merely a step back in the perilous race towards ever-larger and more unpredictable black box models with emerging capabilities. AI research and development needs to be refocused to make today’s sophisticated and powerful systems more accurate, secure, interpretable, transparent, robust, aligned, reliable and loyal.”
That is, research should focus on making AI a tool that helps humanity and does not endanger its survival.
Cryptocurrency billionaires look forward to AI growth
It is worth remembering that the cryptocurrency market is closely watching the growth of AI and wants to use resources to improve the ecosystem itself.
One of the billionaires who knows about AI is Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who has donated to a research fund, which funds doctoral programs in the field of artificial intelligence existential security, an area that seeks to save humanity from the harmful effects of technology.
Besides him, the participation of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in the open letter to the public shows that fans of cryptocurrencies are concerned.
However, it’s not clear whether the letter will have the desired effects of the community of tech enthusiasts, who prefer to wait for regulation of the AI market before any news gets past ChatGPT 4.
