Privacy is the future of web3

On March 18, Museu da Manhã, in Rio de Janeiro, hosted Zcon Vozes Brasil, an event produced by Zcash, a privacy blockchain, in which 60 people participated. The format of the event included breakfast, lectures, lunch, more lectures and panels, ending with a happy hour.

The main goal of Zcon Vozes Brasil was to spread the importance of privacy in the blockchain. During the lectures and panels, various cases and experiences were presented that emphasized the importance of privacy in the protection of personal data and the security of network users.

In addition, the event sought to demystify the mistaken belief that only criminals benefit from privacy, a lie that is often perpetuated in society. While governments, banks and companies have privacy safeguards, society is often taught to live under constant surveillance. Zcon Vozes Brasil stimulated a critical and conscious debate on this crucial subject.

In the first lecture of Zcon Vozes Brasil, Marcos Lustosa and Rodrigo Schonell, both active at CoinEx, discussed the importance of privacy in centralized (Cex) and decentralized (Dex) exchanges.

During his presentation, Marcos emphasized the relevance of events like this in raising community awareness about the importance of privacy and the responsibility people should have with their own data. He also pointed out that while people still prefer convenience over privacy, the cryptocurrency trading volume on Dex still represents less than 10% of the total market volume, indicating that there is a lot of work to be done to raise awareness about privacy and opportunities in the industry.

At Zcon Vozes Brasil, one of the most impressive speeches was the presentation by Tor’s executive director, Isabela, who emphasized the importance of this privacy browser to help people suffering from censorship in their country.

Isabela cited Iran as an example, where many people, especially women, can only connect to the internet through Tor. In addition, she mentioned that in some African countries, women are prohibited from going to colleges, but the privacy guaranteed by Tor has allowed these women to study.

When questioned about the criminal use of private networks, Isabela stressed that technology should not be blamed for the actions of malicious individuals.

She stressed that banning or criminalizing access to technology is a superficial solution to the problem and that it is important to remember that technology was created to benefit society as a whole, not just a few individuals. Therefore, Browser Tor’s executive director encouraged the responsible use of technology, which should be used to promote privacy and freedom of expression, as well as combat censorship and oppression.

Another panel at the event addressed the importance of privacy in DAOs, demonstrating the existing market of “chain bribery” where people can buy votes and influence decisions. Guiriba Research Paradigm, DAO contributor, and João Kury, Bankless Brasil contributor, showed that Daos governance is still flawed despite the existence of different types of governance. Privacy can help suppress issues that exist in Daos, such as the influence of whales.

Born in 2016, Zcon is well known in the US, with this year’s Zcon in Barcelona. Zcon Vozes Brasil was Zcon’s first event outside the US and showcased the importance of blockchain privacy and how it can be used to change the system through web3 technology.
