Bitcoin whitepaper found hidden in Apple’s operating system

The Bitcoin whitepaper, a nine-page document summarizing the project, was found hidden on a Mac computer. To the surprise of Andy Baio, owner of the Waxy blog, the document was also on other Apple computers.

I asked more than a dozen friends who use Macs to confirm, and [o whitepaper do bitcoin] it was in all.”

Reportedly, the Bitcoin whitepaper can be found on all versions of macOS, from Mojave (10.14.0) to the latest Ventura (13.3). However, it is not available in High Sierra (10.13) or earlier versions.

The discovery was published on Wednesday (5), the date considered to be Satoshi Nakamoto’s birthday. Although his date of birth seems more like a trick than reality, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin would have lived to be 48 years old.

Why is the Bitcoin whitepaper on Mac computers?

According to Andy Baio, the user who found the hidden whitepaper, the document serves as an example of the Virtual Scanner II feature. However, there is little information about how it got there.

In an update to the article, Baio mentions receiving information that the fact was already known to Apple, but the technician who posted the PDF there showed no interest in removing it.

Apparently, the first mention of the Bitcoin whitepaper on Mac computers was recorded on November 28, 2020. On that date, a user named Josh was also surprised to find the document after researching Virtual Scanner II.

“Oddly enough, there is also a PDF of the original Bitcoin white paper.”

Later, in April 2021, a user named bernd178 took to Apple’s own forum to question the functionality of Virtual Scanner II, citing the famous document.

“It has a photo of Thomas Hawk on it. I also found the device in /System/Library/Image Caputer/Devices”wrote the user in 2021. “Oddly enough, there is also a PDF of Satoshi Nakamoto’s original Bitcoin whitepaper in the content of the VirtualScanner.app package.”

According to Baio’s theory, “Maybe it was just a lightweight handy multi-page PDF for testing purposes”. After all, the document is only 184 KB in size. Another hypothesis put forward by the blogger is that some Bitcoin maximalist works at Apple.

How do I find Bitcoin whitepaper on Apple computers?

As mentioned above, the Bitcoin whitepaper can be found on all versions of Apple’s operating system between Mojave (10.14.0) and Ventura (13.3). So just open Terminal and type the following command

open /System/Library/Image\ Capture/Devices/VirtualScanner.app/Contents/Resources/simpledoc.pdf

Another way, without using the terminal, is to browse your computer’s files until you find the file called simpledoc.pdf.

“Open Finder and click Macintosh HD, then open System → Library → Image Capture → Devices. Right-click on VirtualScanner.app and then on Show Package Contents, open the Contents → Resources folder and open simpledoc.pdf”noted Baio.

Finally, the community is now starting to speculate whether Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, would be Satoshi Nakamoto. While there are few connections between the two names, it is worth remembering that Steve Wozniak, another founder of Apple, launched his own cryptocurrency a few years ago.
