Is Apple a secret Bitcoin supporter or has an employee taken covert action? That is the question the bitcoin community is currently asking. American tech blogger Andy Baio revealed that the Bitcoin whitepaper is hidden in all modern versions of macOS.
The Bitcoin White Paper is also considered to be Bitcoin’s birth certificate. This document contains all the information about Bitcoin and the Bitcoin blockchain and is written by Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous inventor of Bitcoin.
How do I find the whitepaper on my Mac?
The Bitcoin Whitepaper can be found in every new version of macOS since 10.14.0 released in September 2018. Andy Baio apparently accidentally discovered this while trying to repair his printer. Finding white papers is very easy. Mac users just need to copy and paste the following command into the terminal:
Open /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/VirtualScanner.app/Contents/Resources/simpledoc.pdf
If you have macOS version 10.14.0 or higher, you will immediately see the Bitcoin whitepaper. If you don’t understand this, there is also another way to access the whitepaper through the Finder:
Click Macintosh HD and open System→Library→Snapshot→Devices Folder→Control and click VirtualScanner.app and view contents, open contents→Open simpledoc.pdf
Why is the Bitcoin white paper hidden in macOS?
It’s not clear why the Bitcoin whitepaper is included in all modern versions of macOS. It could be that the document was just a small PDF for testing purposes,
never intended to be seen by end users. It’s no use, it’s not like computers would work better on it…
In particular, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced in 2021 that he is in favor of Bitcoin. When asked if he owned Bitcoin and Ethereum, he replied “yes” and said he has been investing in cryptocurrencies for a long time. Apple still doesn’t do much with Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, but who knows, this hidden whitepaper might be a harbinger!
