Funttel will invest BRL 1.15 billion in telecommunications projects, including blockchain

The board of the Fund for the Technological Development of Telecommunication (Funttel) has authorized the transfer of BRL 1.15 billion for investments in technology, including blockchain.

The council has the cooperation of the Ministry of Communications (MCom) and should transfer the amount between 2023 and 2025. The amounts are intended to finance research, development and innovation projects in telecommunications.

In 2023, the expected investment is BRL 316.3 million, with BRL 424.8 million in 2024 and BRL 418.6 million in 2025.

Funttel’s resources are passed on to the Fund Application Plans of the Foundation Center for Research and Development in Telecommunications (CPqD), the Financier of Studies and Projects (Finep) and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).

Founded in 2000, Funttel is managed by a Management Council made up of representatives from the Ministries of Communications, Development, Industry, Trade and Services, and Science, Technology and Innovation; the National Telecommunication Bureau (Anatel); from BNDES and Finep.

According to the Minister of Communications, Juscelino Filho, the investment volume is essential for the development of the Brazilian telecommunications sector.

“These are funds earmarked for credit lines for network expansion, expansion of production capacity of national manufacturers and for research, development and innovation projects.”

CPqD gets funds to invest in blockchain for health

For CPqD, Funttel will transfer R$61.6 million in 2023 for contracting research, development and innovation projects. The agency confirmed the transfer in a publication in the Official Gazette of the Union on April 4.

First, a project should search for new optical transmission technologies that target connectivity outside major urban centers.

The second project is 5GSaúde, applying advanced technological solutions, such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and others, in health institutions.

5GSAÚDE (Security, Privacy, Inclusion and Quality in Telemedicine under Web3.0). Objectives: development of a set of applications for the healthcare sector, based on Blockchain, Decentralized Digital Identity (IDD), Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and 5G technologies, and conducting pilot tests in a relevant environment for validation of the applications and technologies used. Resources in 2023: BRL 800,000.00 (eight hundred thousand reais) in financing. Estimated resources in 2024: BRL 3,214,000.00 (three million two hundred and fourteen thousand reais), of which BRL 2,984,000.00 (two million nine hundred eighty-four thousand reais) in financing and BRL 230,000.00 (two hundred and thirty thousand reais) in capital. Estimated resources in 2025: BRL 7,087,000.00 (seven million eighty-seven thousand reais), of which BRL 5,863,000.00 (five million eight hundred and sixty-three thousand reais) in financing and BRL 1,224,000.00 (one million two hundred and twenty-four thousand reais) in capital .

The aim of the fund is to develop the Brazilian telecommunications sector, to improve national competitiveness in the sector.
