Central Bank opens registration for event about cryptocurrencies and digital Real

The Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) has opened registration for a full-day event about cryptocurrencies and the digital Real. Those interested in participating in the event have until May 7, 2023 to register.

The workshop will take place at the International Convention Center of Brazil (CICB), on May 16 in Brasília (DF), with the support of Fenasbac. It will take place in synergy with the annual BC conference, which will take place from 17 to 19 May 2023.

The aim of the workshop is to stimulate debate on topics related to central bank digital currencies, tokenization and crypto-assets. Applications are available on a publicly available form.

BCB president, Campos Neto, should participate in an event about cryptocurrencies and digital Real

The workshop will discuss topics related to central bank digital currencies, tokenization and cryptoassets.

For better use, the morning discussions take place in parallel sessions by theme: Law; Economics and Finance; and technology.

In the afternoon, the multidisciplinary panel “Interoperability, competition and regulation in a world of digital assets” will take place, in which three selected articles, one from each thematic sub-axis, will be discussed together.

The workshop will conclude with the “Innovation and Digital Economy” roundtable, in the presence of BC President Roberto Campos Neto and Prof. Robert Townsend of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Articles from various universities about cryptocurrencies, stablecoins and digital Real

A total of 20 papers, out of 93 submitted for the public call for papers, were selected by BC to be discussed at the event.

The authors are affiliated with various universities in Brazil and abroad, multilateral institutions and central banks. Discussions also include articles from private sector experts.

The papers have been selected and will be discussed by researchers specialized in the subject.

In the field of Law, for example, Camila Villard Duran (ESSCA), Carlos Ragazzo (FGV) and Leandro Novais e Silva (UFMG) will participate in panels.

In Economics and Finance, Eduardo Diniz (FGV), Francisco Rivadeneyra (Bank of Canada), Marco Bonomo (Insper) and Robert M. Townsend (MIT) lead the discussions. Finally, Eduardo Adilo Pelinson Alchieri (UnB) and Rafael Nasser (PUC-Rio) participate in the Technology sub-axis.

Those unable to attend the event in person can follow all the discussions throughout the day on the YouTube channel of the Central Bank of Brazil.

Before the applications were released to the public, the central bank had cleared space for article authors to submit their work. The event is a milestone in the history of cryptocurrencies and digital real as it will be the first workshop on the subject, in the BCB’s new format of annual events.
