The National Agency for Water and Basic Sanitation (ANA), affiliated with Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment, has opened a new public notice seeking solutions using blockchain technology to help combat plastic in rivers.
To participate, projects must be in the prototype stage so that they contribute to reducing plastic waste pollution in water bodies.

To remove plastic from Brazilian rivers, the new tender linked to ANA includes technical cooperation with the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI).

According to Communication No. 5/2023, published in the Official Gazette of the Union, interested parties can participate in three categories, namely social, public administration and industry.
In the social field, competing projects try to reduce the amount of plastic in water bodies based on the innovative action of citizens, collectors, cooperatives or associations of collectors.
In the Public Management category, those who fight to reduce the amount of plastic in water bodies can participate through the innovative action of town halls, the federal government, public consortia, companies that provide collection, transport, transshipment, treatment and disposal of waste. household solids, or sub-national bodies regulating municipal solid waste services.
Finally, in Industry, those projects are invited that aim to reduce the amount of plastics in water bodies through the innovative action of industries, from the generation of products using plastics to the recycling or reintroduction of plastics in the production chain.
Blockchain, artificial intelligence and more technologies compete for prices of R$ 110 thousand
The nine winning bidders will each receive a prize equivalent to R$110,000.00. To participate, all interested parties can present innovations related to digital technologies, including blockchain, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, geolocation, Internet of Things (IoT), among others.
The registration runs from 1/6 to 19/07, and the participating projects must participate in several phases until the end of the competition, in October 2023. By December, the winning projects must implement their proposals to improve the health of Brazil’s rivers .
