PT Senator asks CPMI on Jan. 8 to investigate the use of cryptocurrencies

In the context of the investigations of CPMI of January 8asked Sen. Augusta Brito (PT-CE) whether the discussions would also determine whether cryptocurrencies were used.

The Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) is an effort by deputies and senators to investigate the acts that took place in Brazil on January 8, 2023, when people raided the Planalto Palace, STF and other public buildings, destroyed property and caused damage to the country .

In filing a request with the CPMI, the senator argued that Brazil’s Federal Revenue should guide cryptocurrency brokers. It is worth remembering that since 2019 all crypto platform negotiations send information to the tax authorities.

PT Senator asks that the “January 8th CPMI” examine the use of cryptocurrencies

Through requirement 630/2023, Senator Augusta Brito, of the PT of Ceará, asked Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service to provide information about cryptocurrency brokers and their clients.

The goal is to identify the use of cryptocurrencies in possible funding of demonstrations that took place in early January 2023.

“Requires the request to the Brazilian Federal Tax Agency (RFB) to provide information on cryptocurrency exchanges reporting their activities with digital assets to the plenary session of this Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry.”

The senator also recalled in her justification that some information technologies enabled the spread of fake news. So she understands that it would be surprising if the funding of these mobilizations followed similar virtual paths.

In addition, the senator of the party affiliated with President Lula called for the investigation to be expanded, including cryptocurrencies.

Since the IRS already collects data from investors in cryptocurrency brokerages, the senator argued for the possibility of information records that clarify the matter.

Senator is not ruling out asking for a list of individuals and companies that have moved values in brokerages

In submitting the request to the CMPI on Jan. 8, Senator Augusta defended that her request seeks to know whether cryptocurrencies funded demonstrations in Brazil. For example, the use of brokerage houses by suspects on the eve of the date of the facts can prove the theory of the parliamentarian.

“In this way, we are trying to expand investigations on crypto assets, and the recording of information, especially about atypical operations involving such digital assets, on the eve of some episodes may indicate financial support for such” anti-democratic acts. Identifying possible sources of this information is exactly what this application means.”

Going forward, the senator said she wouldn’t rule out asking for lists of people and companies that have moved cryptocurrencies on exchanges. All of this, she says, can help prove whether or not technologies were used to support the actions under investigation.
