Augusto Aras authorizes the prosecution to go abroad for a cryptocurrency event

The Attorney General of the Republic, Antônio Augusto Brandão de Aras, has released a prosecutor from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Paraíba to attend a cryptocurrency event in Chile.

The prosecutor in question is Tiago Misael de Jesus Martins, who has coordinated some articles on the subject of cryptocurrencies at the Federal Government Ministry. He currently works in the municipality of Patos, in Paraíba, a state that is experiencing a wave of scams related to the image of cryptocurrencies, mainly with the Braiscompany and Fiji businesses.

The lawyer will participate in the 2nd meeting of the Western Hemisphere Cryptocurrency Working Group, put together by the US Department of Justice, to be held from June 14 to 16, 2023 in Santiago, Chile, according to information in the Official Gazette of the Union.

Augusto Aras has released the accuser ahead of a US-promoted cryptocurrency event

With the release of the Paraíba prosecutor to visit Chile’s cryptocurrency event, Augusto Aras reinforces the MPF’s interest in deepening knowledge on the subject.

Before the prosecutor’s confirmation, a civilian police officer from Goiás state had already confirmed his participation in the cryptocurrency gathering.

In addition, the Federal Revenue Service of Brazil has also released a server for the event promoted by the US Department of Justice. Apparently Brazil is supposed to have servers from different regions during the event.

MPF in view of the subject of cryptocurrencies

The Federal Government Ministry (MPF) has expressed an interest in the subject of cryptocurrencies, mainly after several operations against regulations in recent years.

And one of the interests in the topic even involves the production of scientific papers on crimes involving cryptocurrencies. The MPF has collected authors’ publications on the subject and will receive texts dealing with crimes until the end of July 2023.

Prosecutor Tiago Misael de Jesus Martins, co-ordinator of the publication, says that the academic discussion about the impact of crypto-assets on the law and in particular in the context of criminal investigations is of global importance. For him, by organizing a collection of articles on the subject, the MPF contributes to spreading knowledge and broadening this debate.

“The initiative demonstrates the institutional vision of the MPF Criminal Chamber and anticipates reflections that will arise with the imminent entry into force of Law 14.478/2022, scheduled for July this year.”

With regard to the cryptocurrency market, the Attorney General of the Republic can play an indirect role by influencing regulatory issues and investigations related to the use of this digital currency.

While the specific regulation of cryptocurrencies is the responsibility of agencies such as the Central Bank of Brazil and the Securities Commission (CVM), the MPF can exercise its oversight role and propose legal action to combat crimes involving cryptocurrencies such as money laundering, tax evasion and fraud.
