Indira Kempis, a pro-Bitcoin Mexican senator, is running for president of Mexico. His candidacy was announced this week through his social networks, but also in major media such as the newspaper El País.
Shortly after El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as legal tender, in September 2021, the Mexican senator, who was already a lawyer in defense of cryptocurrency, took courage and pledged to make BTC legal tender in her country as well.
“Bitcoin will be legal tender. It’s not a taste or an opinion. That’s because a decentralized future starts there.”
#Bitcoin will be legal tender. It’s not a matter of taste or opinion.

While the Mexican peso is enjoying a strong rally against the US dollar, up 53.6% since April 2020, inflation in the local currency remains high at 5.06% per year. Therefore, Bitcoin could serve as an alternative for those who are tired of this hidden tax.

While her campaign aims for her to become Mexico’s first female president, Indira Kempis also promises to spark a major upheaval in the country’s economy. On her social networks, it is not difficult to find the Mexican senator talking about Bitcoin and especially about freedom.
“Non-traditional financial education. Because it was forbidden to talk about football, religion and politics… Also about money”wrote Kempis on Tuesday (29). “The money belongs to the people, not the government. The new generations deserve this future without taboos.”

About her candidacy, some point out that the candidate has no chance. However, in an interview with El País, Kempis points out that she’s heard this other times in her life, but that hasn’t stopped her from achieving what she wanted.
“I’ve been told that so many times in my life. They told me that I could not study and that I could study with my community. They told me I couldn’t raise my voice against power because they would kill me and I raised my voice to demand justice. I was told I was not allowed to enter politics.”
Bitcoin is becoming a political campaign
Bitcoin has attracted many anarchists to its side since its launch in 2009, many of whom believed the cryptocurrency would be a worthy answer to fiat currencies and state inflation. However, it also managed to attract the attention of less extremist people along the way.
Today, almost 15 years later, Bitcoin seems to have reached the other side of the board. There are several presidential candidates in the US, such as Robert F Kennedy Jr., Francis Suarez It is Ron DeSantisuse Bitcoin in their campaign pledges and promise a freer future.
Already in Argentina Javier Miley won the primary and pledged to end his country’s Central Bank. As an alternative, Milei obviously suggests using Bitcoin, but also guarantees that every Argentinian will be free to choose their currency.
Finally, Nayib Bukele, president of El Salvador, is probably the greatest example of this transition to a Bitcoin-centric economy. Now, Indira Kempis another presidential candidate joins this ‘team’ and Mexico could be the next BTC country.
