Bulgaria’s oldest football club adopts Bitcoin

Bitcoin managed to convince another football club to adopt digital currency. This time it is the Bulgarian club Botev Plovdiv FC, the oldest football club in the country. In addition to Bitcoin, Botev Plovdiv FC also uses the Lightning Network for fast payments and is now present on Nostr, a kind of decentralized version of Twitter.

Pay with Bitcoin

Fans of the Bulgarian club can now pay with Bitcoin at the team’s fan shop and for other needs in and around the stadium.

In addition, the club plans to allow the purchase of playing cards with Bitcoin on the website and of course in the Botev Plovdiv online fan shop.

Anton Zingarevich, chairman of the 111-year-old football club (!), is enthusiastic about the choice of Bitcoin and interestingly emphasizes the potential of the Lightning Network for payments.

“We believe that Bitcoin payments today will become as common in our lives as the Internet. The integration not only matches our vision, but also provides some comfort for fans and stakeholders,” says Zingarevich happily.

Moreover, it also attracts the attention of Bitcoiners, which is not bad for the club.

Collaboration with BTCPay server

The initiative became a reality through a partnership with BTCPay Server, a Bitcoin payment processor known for its open source architecture, secure infrastructure and low fees.

The payment hardware in the stadium was provided by CryptoDesk.bg in partnership with Bitoinize.com, which supplies the point-of-sale devices.

In the image above we see such a device in action in the fan shop of the stadium of the Bulgarian football club. George Manolov, Bitcoin director at Botev Plovdid FC, explains that Bitcoin “offers a universe of technological, social and financial opportunities.”
