A possible accomplice of the “Pharaó dos Bitcoins”, who hired members of the extermination group, was held in prison in a decision of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ). In the motivation of the decision, the handling minister has analyzed the evidence in the file, which shows part of the police investigation of this complex case.
Glaidson Acácio dos Santos, the “Pharaoh of Bitcoins”, was arrested in August 2021 by Operation Kryptos. Initially, he was only charged with crimes against the national financial system and the pyramid.
Federal authorities are investigating that he moved billions of customer reais while GAS Consultoria, his company, was operating. However, in the Lagos region of Rio de Janeiro, months before Glidson’s arrest, violence escalated, with two cases receiving attention.
And one of them is an attack on Nilson Alves (“Nilsinho”), a competitor of the pharaoh who asked people from Cabo Frio to stop investing in GAS and publicly stated that this company could fall at any moment. He also carried out a potentially similar plan, already postponing the looting when he was shot several times and nearly died in March 2021.
In investigating the case, Rio de Janeiro’s civil police reached out to Thiago de Paula Reis, who had issued an arrest warrant in December 2021.
Potential Partner of the Bitcoin Pharaoh Is Trying to Get Out of Jail
In a recent decision on an episode of extreme violence involving the “Pharaoh of Bitcoins”, the STJ reviewed a request for the release of a possible right-hand man of the businessman in his alleged crimes.
The case was analyzed by Minister Joel Ilan Paciornik, who noted in the investigative reports a comprehensive plan regarding the creation of an extermination group in Cabo Frio.
The defense argued that the arrest should be ignored, as there was no evidence to support the decision. In addition, that accused Thiago should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise, as he has “favorable personal circumstances”.
However, in analyzing the request, the minister realized that the case is complex and involves a death squad. According to the file, Thiago Reis is responsible for hiring the men who tried to kill Nilsinho.
†In this case, the preventive detention seems to be well motivated with: based on concrete elements extracted from the records, making the high social danger of the agent and the concrete seriousness of the behaviour, since the applicant, director of business planning at a consultancy and investment firm Victim’s competitor, ordered by Defendant Glaidson – pre-emptively arrested amid the Operation Kryptos, denounced as the leader of a criminal organization targeting practice of financial crimes, fraudulent management of a financial institution, evasion of currency and offering a collective investment agreement without the consent of Organs authorities – hired co-defendants Fabio, Rodrigo, Chingler and Rafael to mow the lawn life of the offended person, as it got in the way of attracting customers to investments in cryptocurrencies. The victim was surrounded in his car, on a public road and in hours of great movement of people, and shot in the neck and bumped to the head, but she was rescued in time and survived her injuries, circumstances that demonstrate social risks.†
STJ rejects request
As the accused is still being tried for his possible crimes, the minister of the STJ realized that he is still subject to the Maria da Penha law and crimes of embezzlement. That is, contrary to what the defense argued, there is a risk that he will be released and the grounds for his arrest are correct and the request for release will be denied.
“In this context, I am not verifying whether there is unlawful coercion that could justify the withdrawal of the applicant’s pre-trial detention. In view of the foregoing, I deny the appeal in habeas corpus.”
The crime case in the Lagos region attracted national attention as Wesley Santarem (“King of Pullback”) ended up dead in a luxury car on a public road after the assassination attempt on Nilsinho. Both cases are under investigation by two civilian police stations in Rio.
In recent days, the “Pharaoh of Bitcoins” has been trying to clean up his image with customers by creating an Instagram channel that will be used to communicate directly with former investors in the plan. The profile already has 17 thousand followers.
