The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) is supporting the creation of the BrumadinhoCoin digital currency (BCOIN), which will be based on blockchain technology. This new currency is being created together with students from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), in Niterói.
Besides the Government of the State of Minas Gerais, the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and Softex, the construction of this project also supports the Centro WEB, or CEWEB as it is better known.
This initiative is part of a pilot project launched in 2019 under the name “Moving on the web – Pro-Bumadinho articulation†
It is worth remembering that the municipality of Brumadinho, in Minas Gerais, was the scene of one of the greatest environmental disasters on January 25, 2019. This is because a Vale ore waste dam has breached and severely damaged the local environment.
The tragedy still leaves its mark and the government continues to seek initiatives to address it.
MCTI supports the creation of BrumadinhoCoin (BCOIN), blockchain-based social currency
Since 2019, 26 proposals have been submitted by undergraduate and graduate students in Brazil to help alleviate Brumadinho’s problems.
Of these, 4 have come to an end and have an implementation contract. Vagner Diniz, manager of Ceweb.br|NIC.br, emphasizes that the projects can also be replicated to other locations in Brazil.
“Of course we want to see the projects work in the city, because the original idea was to solve problems in the local community after the environmental tragedy. However, these issues and needs, raised by the population at a Ceweb.br workshop, are also of national importance. Monitoring the water quality of a river, for example a source, is not a specialty of that municipality”.
And one of the four proposals, which is already nearing completion, is the “BrumadinhoCoin: A Solidarity Environmental Coin”. This MCTI-backed currency will use blockchain technology to encourage locals to save the environment.
For example, people who take actions to conserve forests and watersheds could be rewarded in BCOIN, according to information disclosed by the NIC.
Businesses will be able to create tasks to be performed by the population
In order to deliver BrumadinhoCoin to the population, an internet platform will be developed that will be able to meet companies interested in performing environmental services and people from Brumadinho willing to perform the tasks.
Whoever completes the established services will receive the BCoin currency, which will be accepted in local stores, increasing the economy of the city by encouraging consumption.
The project was presented by UFF, with coordinating professor Antônio Augusto de Aragão Rocha. Other members of the project are Fabiano da Guia Rocha and Luiz Filipe de Jesus do Nascimento, also professors at federal colleges.
