Operation 404 performs metaverse searches for the first time

Last Tuesday (21), the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJ) launched the fourth phase of Operation 404, the first in the country to conduct searches in the metaverse environment.

This term has become popular in recent months, especially after the arrival of Meta (formerly Facebook) in the sector. It’s not clear how the searches took place in this environment, but the result is that four channels of content have been disabled, in addition to 90 videos being removed from the internet.

The fourth phase of Operation 404 included audiovisual piracy targets and channels broadcasting music streaming. According to MJ’s CiberLab, more than 10.3 million downloads have been made on platforms pretending to be from famous artists, such as Alok, Xande Aviões, Marília Mendonça and Aline Barros. The new operation closed more than 461 music streaming apps, a record.

Alessandro Barreto, coordinator of Seopi’s Cyber Operations Laboratory, points out that the fight against piracy continues.

“Criminals advertised events on social media and carried out illegal broadcasts. Our fight against piracy is constant. We are increasingly specializing to curb these practices and identify new crimes.”

The operation had the assistance of civilian police from 11 Brazilian states and more authorities from the United Kingdom and the US.

In Brazil, 30 search warrants were issued in 11 states, an action that resulted in the removal of 266 websites and another 15 social network profiles related to piracy.

The Deputy Secretary for Integrated Operations, Bráulio de Melo, emphasized that the loss of piracy in Brazil amounts to billions of reais per year.

“The main focus is the fight against copyright infringement, which causes Brazil an annual loss of R$15 billion. The role is played by the civil police of the states acting in an integrated manner for the success of the operation.”

Brazilian embassies supported the move, which is fulfilling 59 orders abroad, 53 of which are in the UK and 6 more in the US. Police services from those countries also cooperated in the Brazilian action.

Last Tuesday afternoon, 3 people were arrested in São Paulo, 2 in Minas Gerais and 1 more in Goiás. The operation seized computers, hard drives, mobile phones and server structures.
