The representatives of the natural gas sector reiterated the importance of continuing the exploratory activity to ensure the country’s energy autonomy. They indicated that the suspension of new contracts announced by the central government would affect self-sufficiency in the long and short term.
The Colombia Natural Gas Sector Report 2022 prepared by Promigas finds that in the absence of new discoveries and sanctioned production projects over a 4-year period, it could fall to a level where the country would lose its self-sufficiency.
The president of Promigas, Juan Manuel Rojas, stated that in an international context such as that currently exists in the field of energy, it is more important to continue exploration.
“Our sector has contributed significantly to the fight against energy poverty among Colombians, we have 10.6 million natural gas users in Colombia, of which 10.4 million are households. For this reason, it is very important to have gas produced in the country and to be reliable it is also important to import it, but not from a single source,” the businessman said.
The market needs a long-term signal to keep developing resources, which in turn gives companies the confidence to convert their operations from coal or liquid fuels to gas.
“If we continue to research and produce our gas, we can move towards energy transformation and carbon neutrality,” he added.
He pointed out that the sector is promoting progress on Colombia’s gas massification plan, which will focus on continuing to grow in power generation, transportation and household coverage.
