The Treasury Secretary, José Antonio Ocampo, was in favor of promoting the capitalization of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) during his visit to the United States as part of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Ocampo said that if the bank is not capitalized, it could fall behind in fulfilling its functions and goals.
It is imperative for the official that whoever is going to replace Maurico Claver Carone in the presidency of the IDB must be a person capable of reaching consensus and with extensive knowledge of development banking.
He also stressed that the commitment to the energy transition should be supported through fiscal means, with tax breaks and through national development banks focusing on solar, wind and green hydrogen technologies.
“This is one of the key issues on the agenda of my country’s current government,” he said.
“Combating climate change and stopping deforestation are the top priorities, also from a biodiversity point of view, as we are the second most biodiverse country in the world,” he emphasized.
He argued that the relationship with communities is particularly important in the fight for climate change adaptation and emphasized the importance that financial adjustment should have on the agendas of multilateral development banks and in supporting developing countries in the fight against climate change.
In a meeting with Global Americans, Ocampo explained to investors that one of the goals of the tax reform is to respond to societal demands. In addition, he said that Colombia conducts responsible macroeconomic management.
