Microsoft lays off 10,000 jobs worldwide

Microsoft is laying off 10,000 jobs worldwide this year. The software company is doing this because of the changing economic environment: Since the pandemic, customers are using the company’s software and cloud services less.

“We live in an era of fundamental change,” the company’s CEO, Satya Nadella, writes to employees. “As customers accelerate their digital spending during the pandemic, they now want to do more with less.” The company’s net income fell 14 percent in its last quarter.

Microsoft also has a branch in the Netherlands. The company informs NOS that it “has not made any statements about the results for the Netherlands”.

Microsoft provides 1.2 billion for severance and implementation of “hardware portfolio changes.” Another savings can be found in office buildings: employees there are forced to approach each other again.

Tech companies have long taken advantage of the Corona crisis, where we all started working remotely and shopping online. They hired a lot more people to meet this demand. For example, 40,000 additional employees started working at Microsoft.

Currently, many companies in the tech sector are struggling and have announced massive layoffs. For example, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced last November that it would cut 11,000 jobs. Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, announced that he will turn down 7,500 people the same month. Online store Amazon is laying off more than 18,000 employees.
