Worker registration in Italy for 30 years

Italy hasn’t had that many employees for at least 30 years: now there are 23.3 million. According to the latest Istat data on employment, in addition to the increase in employment, there is an increase in the number of permanent contract and self-employed workers, but unemployment among young people is also increasing. What do statistics data tell us about business in Italy?

In January 2023, while the number of employed and unemployed increased compared to the previous month, the idle decreased. Publishing January data, Istat underlines that the increase in the number of employees has exceeded 23.3 million.

Compared to December 2022, the employment rate rose to 60.8 percent (+0.1 points). Regarding unemployment, however, Istat found that it increased for all age groups between December 2022 and January 2023.

On an annual basis, employment rates increased and unemployment and inactivity rates decreased in all age groups except the 50-64 age group, where unemployment increased.

More permanent contracts but more unemployed young people

Employment and inactivity show opposite trends: employment declines against an increase in inactivity among those under 35; Among those over the age of 35, employment increases and inactivity decreases.

According to Istat, employment is increasing for women, permanent workers and over 35s (+0.2%, equal to +35 thousand); temporary workers, self-employed and youth are declining. The number of job seekers among women and children under 50 is increasing on a monthly basis (+1.7%, +33 thousand units).

The total unemployment rate rose to 7.9% (+0.1 points), while the youth population rate rose to 22.9% (+0.7 points). The decrease in the number of inactive people between the ages of 15-64 (-0.7%, -83 thousand) includes men, women and people over 35 years old. The inactivity rate drops to 33.9% (-0.2 points).
