KLM and other companies file summary lawsuit over Schiphol downsizing

KLM, along with four other airlines, is suing the Dutch state without trial. They disagree with the Schiphol contraction announced last year.

Due to noise and environmental pollution, the airport has to decrease from a maximum of 500,000 flights per year to 440,000 in 2024. According to the companies, alternatives were not considered. They believe they can achieve lower noise and CO2 emissions while maintaining the number of flights.

Airlines KLM and Delta Air Lines, Corendon, Easyjet and TUI describe the cabinet’s decision as “incomprehensible”. “The cabin imposes operating restrictions without examining viable alternative noise reduction solutions,” they say.

Companies believe that noise pollution and CO2 emissions can be reduced in other ways as well.

It is not yet known when the emergency procedure will be notified. KLM senior woman Marjan Rintel has previously said she does not agree with the cabinet decision.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management said in a response that it can no longer address the airlines’ claims as there is a potential lawsuit. “At the same time, we want to preserve the mode of operation where the tracks at Schiphol are used in a way that causes minimal disturbance,” the ministry says.
