Mont Blanc tunnel to be closed for 15 weeks

The Mont Blanc tunnel will be closed for more than three consecutive months from September 4 to December 18, 2023, then in 2024 due to years of heavy renovation work.

Built 60 years ago, the tunnel is the largest road axis connecting France and Italy, and is used by 1,700 trucks and 3,600 cars per day, rising to over 6,000 in August. The road, more than 11 kilometers long, is at a critical stage where one-time repairs are no longer sufficient. In late 2022, news of possible shutdown scenarios in the Italian press caused serious concern in Italian business circles, with some fearing they would “knock the country’s economy to its knees”. According to the Alpine Regions Agency, about 92% of goods transported between France and Italy pass by road. That’s three million heavy vehicles and 43 million tons (Mt) on the Alpine roads.
