Amazon cuts 9,000 workers; add 27 thousand layoffs

Amazon announced on Monday to its employees a new round of layoffs that will affect 9,000 employees “in the coming weeks.”

These cuts come on top of Amazon’s previously announced layoffs that began last November and continued through January of this year, laying off more than 18,000 employees in equipment and services, HR and retail.

With this new cut, layoffs will reach 27,000.

“It was a difficult decision, but we believe it is the best decision for the company in the long term,” CEO Andy Jassi said Monday in a message that was first shared with his employees and then the world in a statement. . . .

Yassi indicated that this new reduction will affect the following areas: Amazon Web Services (AWS), People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT), the advertising department and its Twitch streaming channel.

“Given the economic uncertainty we are living in and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have decided to be more efficient with our costs and personnel,” Yassy explained as the rationale for his decision.

Amazon, the second most employed company in the US after Walmart stores, had 1,540,000 employees in 2022, down 4.7% from 2021.

Last week, Facebook parent company Meta Platforms announced on Tuesday it was cutting 10,000 jobs, just four months after laying off 11,000 employees, making it the first major tech company to announce a second round of massive layoffs.

While on February 8, US multinational e-commerce eBay announced the layoff of 500 employees, 4% of their workforce due to the fall in the purchasing power of families due to inflation and after the “boom” experienced by the sector during the pandemic.

Restructuring was justified “macroeconomic situation in the world”, after declining sales seen over the past six months, Jamie Iannone, CEO of eBay, told the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the US competition regulator.

“To ensure eBay’s long-term sustainable growth, we need to grow our organization,” Iannone said. In this way, eBay is joining other technology platforms such as Google to lay off 12,000 employeesMicrosoft with 10,000 or also Amazon, eBay’s direct competitor.
