The directive was adopted between the Council and the EU Parliament last year, pending only the official approval of the two institutions. But at the last second, Berlin and Rome asked for an exemption for biofuels and e-Fuels, synthetic fuels produced on the continent that are almost unknown to many and produced in very small numbers, which have become the center of the emissions debate in Europe.

e-Fuels, or electrofuels, are created through a complex chemical process using electricity to combine hydrogen molecules from water with carbon from CO2 to create a liquid fuel that works in existing engines like regular fuel. However, there is an ongoing debate on the road to zero emissions and whether to focus on eFuel for sustainable mobility. “The German solution is only on paper, but not in reality,” Geert Decock, director of the energy and electricity sector at Transport & Environment (T&E), a European federation of associations active in the field, told Today.it. green transportation. “Germany’s war seems only to save the combustion engine, because Berlin is blocking such an important directive for a fuel that is not produced in sufficient quantity to meet the demands of the automotive market”.
