One of the organizations that signed a manifesto yesterday demanding a six-month suspension of experiments with highly advanced artificial intelligence (AI) denounced the technology company OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, in the US, saying that the technology it uses, called GPT-4, violates consumer protection law .
He Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Policy (CAIDP) has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC, official), alleging that the GPT-4 product is “biased, misleading, and a privacy and public safety risk.”
“The FTC has a clear responsibility for investigating and prohibiting unfair and deceptive business practices. We believe the FTC should take a closer look at OpenAI and GPT-4,” said CAIDP President Mark Rothenberg.
According to Rotenberg, OpenAI does not comply with the practices proposed by the FTC, such as relaiva to guarantee from artificial intelligence companies “empirical validity of the data and models used”, as well as their transparency.
The lawsuit alleges that the technology lacks sufficient safeguards to limit bias and deception.
Rothenberg was one of the businessmen and personalities who signed an open letter yesterday asking for a suspension of very powerful artificial intelligence experiments (greater than GPT-4) for six months as they believe “they can raise deep risks for society and humanity“.
“Society has settled on other technologies with potentially disastrous consequences for society. We can do it here. Let’s enjoy the long summer hiatus from using artificial intelligence and don’t rush to fall unprepared,” reads the letter, published by the nonprofit Future of Life Institute.
Among the signatories were Tesla CEO Elon Muskor Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, among others, who are also asking governments to intervene if those companies don’t respond to this request.
“Advanced AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth and should be planned and managed with appropriate care and resources,” the letter said, which also criticized “that artificial intelligence laboratories they were engaged in an uncontrolled race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds.”
GPT, which stands for Generative Pretrained Transformers, is a type of model machine learning which is used to create a humanoid language. GPT-4 is much more advanced than previous similar models.
The OpenAI Lab defines GPT-4 as “the latest milestone in the effort to expand deep learning.” This new system accepts texts and images and generates text.
However, OpenAI claims that the GPT-4 is still less capable than humans in many real-world situations, although it “shows human-level performance across a variety of academic and professional benchmarks.”
