Barranquilla’s unemployment rate falls and stands at 11.5%

In the quarter analyzed, 587 thousand people made up the working population in Barranquilla, this figure represents 18 thousand people more than in the same period of 2022.

In turn, the jobless population went from 80,000 in the December 2021 and February 2022 quarters to 77,000 in the same period this year.

On these results, Juan Manuel Alvarado, city manager, said the industry with the highest percentage of employees is still trade and auto repair with 213,000 employees, followed by manufacturing with 103,000 employees.

Meanwhile, the Atlantic capital’s occupancy rate stands at 57.3%, up one percentage point from the moving quarter of December 2021 and February 2022, which stood at 56.3%.

“In recent months, the district continues to record the highest occupancy rates in its history, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers,” Alvarado stressed.

In terms of informality, unlike Barranquilla and Cartagena, the cities of the Caribbean lead with the highest percentages. Riohacha at 67.2%, Sincelejo at 66.3% and Valledupar at 65% register the highest informality rates in the country.

In the case of Barranquilla, he maintained his informal employment rate at 58.5%.

When analyzing Barranquilla and its metropolitan area (only at Soledad) shows that the unemployment rate in the period December 2022 and February 2023 was 12.7%, the fourth lowest on the Caribbean coast. In the same quarter last year, this percentage was 13.1%.

In turn, the lowest unemployment rate was in the Caribbean Santa Marta with 9.5%followed by Cartagena, with 11.5%.
