Schiphol to cancel all night flights in two years

In two years at the latest, Schiphol wants to cancel all night flights. This was confirmed by the airport spokesperson, Het Parool reported. Top man Ruud Sondag shares the intention in an interview with the newspaper.

According to Sondag, Schiphol will be closed between midnight and 5 am. In this case, neither air traffic nor freight traffic will be allowed to use the runways. Only planes are allowed to land between 06:00 and 07:00.

Schiphol also wants to gradually ban aircraft that make a lot of noise, such as the Boeing 747. Private jets will also be banned. The newspaper reported that these and other measures should be fully implemented by 2025 at the latest.

‘A significant impact’

“The night precaution comes into effect immediately,” Sondağ says in the interview that AD published in its entirety. “By the end of 2025 at the latest, but a year ago for me.” He says he will consult with airlines because “it actually has a significant impact.” More than half of all flights in Schiphol are operated by Transavia.

According to Het Parool, the decision will have implications for, among other things, holiday flights and Schiphol as a transfer airport. This means less hassle for local residents. According to calculations made by the airport, 17,500 fewer people will soon be “significantly disturbed” by air traffic.
