Ita Airways and Lufthansa: Shutdown delayed?

The countdown has begun for the Lufthansa operation of Ita Airways, the new 100% state-owned Italian airline, born from the ashes of Alitalia. Today, the first step towards the privatization of the company should be taken with the transfer of 40% of MEF shares to the German airline. However, there are still some uncertainties regarding the outcome of the negotiations.

Negotiations are expected to conclude today.

Negotiations between Lufthansa and Mef on Ita Airways have reached the final stage. 40% of the shares are expected to pass on Monday, April 24, 2023. There shouldn’t be any last minute surprises, but the last word hasn’t been said.

Positive signals are coming from Italy. Recently, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti talked about a very complex but advanced negotiation: “I think I can say that in a few days we will reach a conclusion, I hope it is positive”. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also showed optimism: “We solved a seemingly impossible situation, no one has been able to do it. Milan Finance -. Now Lufthansa will have to ensure that Italy is at the center of its interests, presenting an effective, expanding industrial plan that serves trade and tourism avenues.”

Ita-Lufthansa, German media: “Closing postponed”

Some minor uncertainties remain, however: A spokesperson for the German company would tell German news agency Dpa that “talks are going well, but not yet concluded.” Lufthansa did not provide details or a new date for the expected signing of the contract.

Even if the negotiations are positive, the official announcement of the privatization of Ita Airways will be made only during the week, not during the day, due to the long weekend on April 25. According to some rumors, the price of a 40% stake in Ita Airways will fluctuate between 250 and 300 million euros.
