State of emergency declared for bacteria found in tilapia and fingerlings

Agriculture Minister Jhénnifer Mojica announced the measure on Thursday after finding the bacteria in species of tilapia and fish fry in the Magdalena department.

The government announced a few weeks ago that it has taken a series of measures to prevent and control the bacteria that raised alarms and prevention plans when it was found in tilapia species in the Betania dam in El Huila.

The emergency, said the minister, includes cleaning and disinfection management by specialists from ICA and Aunap.

“It is a bacteria that we have not identified as affecting human health and we will be following up on the cases together with the Department of Health and the National Institute of Health.”

Atlántico, the agriculture minister added, has presented cases with the bacteria.

Mojica said the warning is intended to admonish farmers and fishmongers across the country to prevent smuggling and other practices of products if they lack certification from institutions such as ICA and Aunap.

“We want to reassure growers, sellers and everyone involved in this activity that the containment and treatment work we are carrying out will not affect the market,” said the Agriculture Minister.

The government announced that the emergency and control plan will reach the checkpoints and surveillance posts in ports, highways and borders.
