Orlen develops its own courier service and Poczta Polska cannot compete with other companies. There is a plan to split PP and merge it with Orlen.
The Ministry of State Assets is analyzing the possibility of dividing the Polish Post, reports “Rzeczpospolita”. It’s about building a company that can compete in the KEP market (courier, express, parcel) with InPost or with foreign tycoons, such as DHL and DPD. A separate entity dealing with courier services would be separated from PP. Due to the fact that the new initiative would require significant external funding, the idea arose that Orlen should take over. For several years now, the energy concern has been successfully developing its own courier service – Orlen Paczka.
There is no confirmation
Relinquishing courier services would be an opportunity to face the competition. However, this would mean a reduction in Poczta Polska’s services. All that would be left to her are letters and e-government.
Officially, none of the parties or the ministry has commented on these plans. Orlen admitted that “several options are being considered that will contribute to the development of the Orlen Paczka vending machine network”. PP does not deny that the project to split the company is being considered.
– The board of directors is in constant contact with the owner to develop the optimal legal and structural framework for the further operation of the company – Poczta Polska spokesman Daniel Witkowski told Rzeczpospolita.
Save jobs
PP’s financial condition is not the best. Last year the post office made a loss of PLN 5.7 million. In 2021 it had more than PLN 177 million profit. According to the head of the Free Trade Union of Postal Workers, the split of the post office is the only chance to save jobs. The unprofitable part of the company that would continue to provide public services would become a state-owned joint-stock company as before 2009.
“In such a model, it would be easier to subsidize unprofitable services from the state budget,” notes Moniuszko.
However, not everyone sees the point in building a national courier tycoon by the government.
– This could be another utopian project – like the Central Communication Port – says Artur Olejniczak, an expert at the University of Logistics.
