Water shortage in Poland. The government intervenes

The cabinet has established a program to combat water scarcity in 2027 with a view to 2030.

The government has passed a resolution on the water scarcity mitigation program up to 2027 with a perspective up to 2030, aiming to increase water retention in Poland to 15%. in 2030 of 7.5 percent. This is reported by the National Information Center (CIR). It is planned to carry out 727 investments in this area.

“The government wants to increase water retention in Poland. The planned actions will have a positive impact on water management, especially when it comes to reducing the risk of flooding and mitigating the effects of drought. The program will provide artificial and natural retention,” the release said.

The program proposes measures aimed at increasing the conservation of reservoirs and canals in forest, agricultural and urban areas.

What is the government proposing?

The program will increase the amount of water retained, as well as improve the area and conditions for water ecosystems and water-dependent ecosystems. The availability of water resources for agriculture must also improve.

It is assumed that the effect of the program will be an increase in water retention in Poland from 7.5% to 7.5%. (currently) to the level of 15% in 2030. A total of 727 investments are planned to be implemented, including 94 water retention facilities (basins) and 633 facilities that shape retention (damming, regulatory and other constructions).

Poland currently ranks penultimate in Europe in terms of water resources. There are about 1.6 thousand people per capita in Poland. m3/year (quantity of water flowing out of a given country per capita per year). However, in Europe, the average value is almost 3 times higher and is approx. 4.5 thousand. m3/year/person.
