Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk said there will be no anti-inflation shield in next year’s budget and VAT on food will be reinstated.

The PO leader spoke at a meeting at the European Solidarity Center in Gdańsk on Thursday. He was referring to the 43rd anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements which fell on that day.

– Today we feel exactly the same as the workers who joined the strike. Today, Kaczyński and Morawiecki can say the same: “the government will feed itself”. The government is doing a great job with this inflation, he argued.

What about the anti-inflation shield next year?

The anti-inflation shield is a zero VAT rate on basic food products, extended until the end of 2023. “In the fight against inflation and the crisis caused by Russia, the most important thing for us is to protect the wallets of Poles,” emphasizes the government.

So far, thanks to this solution, about 12 billion złoty has remained in the purses of the Poles. It is estimated that this will amount to about PLN 19 billion by the end of 2023.

The food shield came into effect in February 2022. VAT was only reduced on goods that were taxed at a rate of 5%. That’s about 80 percent. purchases of Polish women and Poles.

Draft budget 2024 adopted by the government

Deputy Finance Minister Sebastian Skuza announced on Thursday that the draft budget for 2024 does not provide for the maintenance of the anti-inflation shield. He reserved that he did not know what the final “political decision” would be.

The Council of Ministers adopted next year’s draft budget on 24 August. State budget revenues of PLN 683.6 billion, expenditures of PLN 848.3 billion and a state budget deficit of PLN 164.8 billion are assumed. – This is a safe budget in difficult times – said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
