Bulgaria. Farmers oppose the import of agricultural products from Ukraine

Farmers in Bulgaria blocked road traffic and some border crossings. A protest is underway against the decision to restore imports of agricultural products from Ukraine.

On Friday, the European Commission decided not to extend the embargo on Ukrainian grain in five European Union member states (Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania). From Saturday, Ukraine would introduce “effective control measures” on the export of four grains to prevent market disruptions in neighboring countries.

Minister of Development and Technology Waldemar Buda signed a national regulation enforcing the embargo on grain from Ukraine. Poland was followed by Hungary and Slovakia, which, in violation of Brussels’ decision, decided to introduce their own embargo on Ukrainian agricultural products. The list included grains, vegetables, some meat products and honey.

However, not all countries decided to unilaterally extend the ban on the import of agricultural products after the European Commission’s decision. One of them is Bulgaria. Farmers have been protesting there since Monday and emphasize that the state is not helping them enough given the flow of cheap products from Ukraine.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov accuses local grain producers of trying to undermine the government. – I don’t negotiate with terrorists – he said. In response, farmers noted that “protests are a democratic way to express one’s position and protect interests in every EU member state.”

Ukraine’s response to the embargo

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the European Commission’s decision to lift the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain. “I thanked Ursula von der Leyen for keeping her word. This is an example of cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union in true unity and trust. If the rules are respected and agreements are kept, Europe always wins,” the leader said on social media. media.
