Socha: I look at the Third Way proposals with horror

I am really surprised how such an important topic as social policy can be approached in such a way – says Barbara Socha, Deputy Minister of Family, Labor and Social Policy, in an interview with DoRzeczy.pl.

DoRzeczy.pl: How do you evaluate words? the leader of Poland 2050, Szymon Hołownia, announcing the liquidation of the 800+ program?

Barbara Socha: It is difficult for me to comment on the words or statements of a formation that changes its mind from one day to the next. I’ve heard some strange ideas from that site, so it’s hard to comment. The only comment that comes to mind is that they don’t care. I heard from Mr Hołownia that this will depend on the political climate. I am truly amazed how such an important issue as social policy can be approached in such a way.

What do you think about the idea that the benefit would only apply to working people?

It’s shocking how people approach society by proposing such things. Today we have a great situation in the labor market and there is no fear that the benefits everyone receives affects their willingness to work. On the contrary. What if things were different one day, when this benefit could help families in difficult times? I’m surprised the opposition doesn’t think so.

Szymon Hołownia adds that the funds from the liquidation of the program can be used for education, daycare centers and health care. Are these neglected areas?

Absolutely not. We spend large amounts on education and health care. Today we have record subsidies. This year we started a multi-year program for daycare centers to make it easier for local authorities to invest. Here we have a record budget of PLN 5.5 billion. The pace is lightning fast at the moment. For example, a nursery will soon be opened in Otwock with this year’s funds from the Maluch+ program. Unfortunately, there are also local authorities that do not consider daycare centers. Here I can point out Piaseczno, where the number of children is increasing and no one thinks about the childcare infrastructure. However, we will continue to support all local authorities in the areas of education, daycare and healthcare policy.
