Mueller on falling fuel prices: Whatever the government is doing is wrong

The opposition used to not like high fuel prices, now they don’t like low ones. Whatever the government is doing is wrong, government spokesman Piotr Mueller said.

The minister was asked on Polsat News about the situation at gas stations in Poland and the accusations of some experts and politicians against Orlen of artificially lowering the prices of gasoline and diesel before the elections.

– In the past the opposition did not like high fuel prices, now they do not like low fuel prices. Previously they said that the merger of Orlen and Lotos would not yield anything, but now it appears that is the case. Whatever the government does, the opposition thinks it is bad. Of course they have that right, he said.

Commenting that fuel prices are rising on global exchanges and the zloty is weakening, while prices at stations in Poland are still falling, causing fuel shortages, the government spokesperson replied that “if we are concerned that it is a company of the state finances.” Its task is also to buffer shocks on international markets in terms of prices.

Government spokesperson: People accuse us of falling fuel prices

He pointed out that this is an example of another difference in the approach to this problem between the United Right government and opposition representatives. – For example, Mr (Ryszard) Petru says that he would like to privatize Orlen and several other banks. And to whom would he leave it to decide where the burden of these kinds of shocks would be shifted? – asked the government spokesperson.

According to him, “prices would be high here if it were German capital and buffered in Germany so as not to cause shocks there.” – That is the difference. Capital has nationality, he emphasized.

– I understand, as if explaining today’s high prices. But to accuse something, such as that prices are falling in a certain area? I’m a little surprised. “I understand that the opposition might attack this because it is not beneficial to them if we show that a large multi-energy company is an asset and not a problem,” Mueller said.
