Will trading return on Sunday? The opposition announces changes to the law

Coalition Poland 2050 – PSL wants to introduce two shopping Sundays per month, but is ready for talks – said Michał Kobosko.

– Ours […] the requirement, seriously thought out and prepared, amounts to two Sundays [pracujące] per month. In return, there are days off for trade employees during the week, during working days, and the Labor Inspectorate is strengthened to actually supervise this, Kobosko said on Radio Zet.

Referring to the comment that the Civic Platform’s demand only concerns Sunday shopping, Kobosko said: “We will talk about it.”

– It seems to me that the current system, the current state, is not necessary in Poland. People who work hard during the week want to be able to shop on Sundays at least occasionally, he emphasized.

Conversations between PO and Third Way

Asked whether the parties would reach an agreement on this, he said: “We will reach an agreement as part of a broader coalition agreement.”

The law of January 10, 2018 on the restriction of trade on Sundays and public holidays and on certain other days entered into force on March 1, 2018. It was based on a gradual restriction of trade on Sundays and public holidays. From 2020, the ban no longer applies on the last Sundays of January, April, June and August, nor on two Sundays in December and one Sunday before Easter.

Outside this period, the following businesses benefit from exemption from the trade ban: gas stations, pharmacies, flower shops, souvenir shops, shops in hotels and tax-free zones, as well as post offices.
