Meta will offer users in the European Union ad-free access to Facebook and Instagram for a subscription fee.
The American company Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, announced that it is introducing fees for services. Importantly, Meta can still use the account with ads – for free.
“If you choose to continue using the products for free, your experience will remain the same, and that experience will continue to be powered by the tools and settings we’ve created to give people control over their ads,” Meta explained in a statement. .
Facebook and Instagram fees
Starting in November, users can subscribe to social networking sites for $9.99 per month on the web on computers or $12.99 per month on mobile devices.
The Banker Portal pointed out that “after converting the given rates into our currency, this amounts to about PLN 45 per month for access on computers and almost PLN 60 in mobile systems.”
Response to EU regulations
According to Meta, the subscription will be available in the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland. The Facebook charges are Meta’s response to further EU regulations on how user data is collected and used in Europe, Bloomberg reported.
“The option to purchase an ad-free subscription balances the requirements of European regulators by giving users choice and allowing Meta to continue providing services to all people in the EU, EEA and Switzerland. In its judgment, the CJEU clearly recognized that a subscription model such as the one we are announcing is an important form of consent for a service that is financed by advertising,” we read in the announcement.
Additional account fees
Meta clarified that the subscription includes all linked Facebook and Instagram accounts visible in the User Account Center.
However, starting March 1, 2024, each additional account listed in the User Account Center will incur an additional fee of €6 per month on Internet on computers and €8 per month on mobile devices.
Meta project
Recall that in October 2021, Mark Zuckerberg presented the new name of his company during the Facebook Connect event. The meta was supposed to better define what the tech giant plans to do in the near future. Zuckerberg plans to expand the reach of his activities beyond social media into areas such as virtual reality.
However, only the name of the entire company has changed. The social networking site is still called Facebook.
