Tari is coming for tourists: Tourism tax is getting expensive

The 2024 budget law reviews the legislation on tourism tax, taking into account the 2025 Jubilee. The changes can be read in art. 82 of the maneuver text was stamped by the State Accounting Office and provides for the possibility of increasing the tourist tax for tourists by up to 2 euros per night. Thus, municipalities will be able to use the extra income to cover the costs of waste collection and disposal services. However, there are also art cities that can exceed the maximum ceiling of 10 Euros per night, which ones?

Some cities may exceed the maximum limit of 10 Euros

A new innovation in the budget law regarding the tourism tax is the tax applied to those who stay in hotels or non-hotel accommodation facilities in some cities of Italy. The government decided that in 2025, on the occasion of the Jubilee celebrations of the Catholic Church, “the state capital municipalities, municipal unions and municipalities will be included in the lists of regional tourist resorts or cities of the arts.” It can be increased “within the 2 euro limit”.

Exceptions are foreseen that will allow some art cities to exceed the maximum limit of 10 euros stipulated by current legislation. In fact, the Roman Capital and the municipality of Venice will be able to raise the tourist tax by 2 euros above the current limit, bringing the tax for tourists to 12 euros per night. Extra earnings can be used not only for local utilities but also to cover costs associated with waste collection and disposal service.

For the planning and implementation of work and interventions for the event, the Ministry of Economy and Finance has temporarily created “a donor fund of 75 million euros, 305 million euros in 2024, to be distributed from the existing part.” 8 million euros in 2025 and 8 million euros in 2026; “Expenditures for capital account interventions have also been authorized in the amount of 50 million euros for 2024, 70 million euros for 2025 and 100 million euros for 2026.”

There are other details that are certainly overshadowed in the new budget law, but are no less important. Here they are listed in the special section of Today.it for the 2024 maneuver.
