Winter holidays, a luxury for the few: From ski passes to ski lessons, prices are rising

While the arrival of cold weather is welcomed as good news by winter sports enthusiasts who return to skiing, snowboarding and similar sports with the arrival of snow, families are also starting to plan their usual “ski week”. At least those who can afford it. In fact, it is not possible to say the same for winter holiday prices, which will be even higher in the 2023/2024 season if temperatures drop. The average price increase across equipment, ski passes and lessons will be 7.8% more than last year.

Winter holidays, increases for the 2023/2024 season

Spending a week in the mountains is becoming increasingly expensive, as shown by the figures of the “Skipass panorama tourism-Italian mountain tourism observatory”, a research center specializing in the tourism and winter sports market, created annually by JFC. We start with the “card” that allows you to use the ski lifts: In the winter of 2023/2024, ski pass prices on a national basis will increase by 7.2% compared to last season prices.

There are also increases related to the bar/restaurant sector: owners of these businesses will increase their prices very significantly as the average price increase on their listings will be 13%, while ‘8.2%’ will be spent on rooms and services, 7.7% more on ski weeks, weekends and in the high season the price increase will be equal to 12.2%. The increase also affects ski schools, which will adjust their price lists by 7.8% compared to last season. If we make some calculations, one hour of an individual course will be slightly more expensive on average than last year, i.e. 53.50 euros per national average, thus 1 euro/hour more than last year; The cost of a one-hour group course will be 26.00 euros compared to the national average, thus representing an increase of 3 euros per hour compared to the fee/average from last winter.

From the perspective of companies in the sector, a 3.7% increase in total turnover is expected in the winter of 2023/2024 compared to the last winter season. In detail: the accommodation sector (hotel and non-hotel facilities, hotels to villages, hostels to residences, farmhouses to farms, houses and rental accommodation, etc.) will achieve a measurable increase in turnover of +3.3%. ; Following this, services linked to sports activities (ski instructors, ski passes, equipment rental service, ski lifts, etc.) will be the services that will achieve the largest growth margin equal to +4.1%; other services (food service, trade, leisure and entertainment activities, etc.) will indicate an increase of +3.9%
