Ukraine is on its way to the EU. Oleksiy Danilov claims that Kiev is not hiding the facts about corruption in the country and plans to “burn it out with a hot iron.”
The European Commission presented a report on the state of Ukraine’s preparations for EU membership and recommended starting accession negotiations.
Danilov: Burn the corruption with a hot iron
Ukraine’s preparations for EU accession will require reforms in more than thirty areas. Representatives of the political leadership of the Ukrainian state assure that they are determined to meet the requirements.
The Secretary of the Security and Defense Council, Oleksiy Danilov, admitted that Ukraine faces a difficult task. He also announced that Kiev, unlike Moscow, does not hide facts about corruption in the country. As he argued, in this regard, Ukrainian authorities must be prepared to “burn out corruption with a hot iron” and “cleanse the country.”
– We understand that this is our homework. If we do not do this homework, it will be extremely difficult to make progress in future negotiations on EU and NATO membership, Danilov admitted.
The EU expects reforms
The reforms expected by Brussels include: areas of the rule of law, the economy, the fight against corruption and the power of oligarchs, and the protection of national minorities. The Commission imposes a number of specific conditions on Kiev. This includes: o adopting regulations increasing the employment limit for the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, lifting restrictions on this agency’s powers to verify assets, and adopting legal rules on lobbying in accordance with European requirements.
Once a formal recommendation is issued, EU leaders will have to adopt it at the meeting of heads of state and government in December, although the position of some member states, including Hungary, has yet to be clarified.
Zelensky: We make the necessary decisions
President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that despite all the difficulties, Ukraine is making progress towards accession. Kiev is already waiting for the political decision of the European Council in December. According to him, Ukrainians are and have always been part of the common European family. And that is why Ukraine should be part of the European Union.
– The Ukrainians deserve it because of the protection of European values and because even in times of large-scale war we keep our words by developing state institutions. We will take all necessary decisions, the president said in comments after the announcement of the European Commission’s decision.
