Port operator DP World said Australian ports, which have been closed since Saturday due to a cyber attack, have reopened. The attack caused a traffic jam of 30,000 shipping containers that must be cleared starting today.
Dubai’s state-owned DP World is one of the world’s largest port operators. In Australia, the company handles 40 percent of goods imports and exports. The attack affected ports in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.
Perpetrator unknown
The company went offline after the cyber attack was discovered this weekend. Ships could still enter and exit, but the trucks carrying these goods could no longer enter and exit the ports. The company plans to ship 5,000 containers from four ports today; That’s less than a quarter of the normal daily volume nationwide.
It is not yet known who is behind this hack. The Australian government and cyber authorities are involved in the investigation.
Hit
Since there will be a strike at the ports in the coming days, it may take another week for the backlog to be eliminated and customs procedures to return to normal. The Maritime Union has been bargaining for higher wages and better working conditions for some time, but has not been able to achieve the desired results.
