Andrzej Domański, tipped as the future finance minister in Donald Tusk’s government, announced that teacher pay increases will be a priority for the opposition.
Andrzej Domański, previously head of the Civic Institute – a think tank affiliated with the Civic Platform, announced that the new government’s priority will be a 30% pay increase for teachers, including academic teachers. If they cannot be introduced from January 1, 2024, teachers will receive compensation.
– These are solutions that are an absolute priority for us, I want to say that very clearly. They are absolutely not dependent on the introduction of other elements of our great program of change in education. We will do everything we can to ensure that these changes come into effect on January 1. If we do not reach the budget on time, the amount of the increase for teachers will certainly be equalized from January – he said on Radio Zet.
What about credit holidays?
On Thursday, Prime Minister Morawiecki announced that the draft law on credit holidays for 2024 had been submitted to the Sejm. The Sejm will discuss the law at its next session. Will the opposition, which has a majority in Parliament after the October elections, reject the project presented by PiS?
Domański did not rule out that “some form of credit holidays will be maintained next year”, although in his opinion this aid should be targeted at people who actually need it.
– We know that a significant portion of these savings from borrowing holidays were actually spent on overpaid loans. We have solutions in the system that target people who actually have problems repaying loans, and the system should be based on these solutions, he said.
At the same time, Domański stated that the Citizens’ Coalition would not back down from its promise to introduce a 0% loan, although this demand was not included in the coalition agreement.
– We will talk with partners in the coalition about the possibility of introducing this solution, perhaps in an adapted formula – he admitted.
