I have submitted a motion to the Constitutional Tribunal to make Poland pay half of the electricity bill, said Zbigniew Ziobro, Minister of Justice.
Ziobro explained at a press conference on Friday that Poles pay more for electricity “because of the solutions imposed on our country by the European Union as part of the ETS system, which obliges us to buy the so-called CO2 emission allowances, i.e. carbon dioxide.”
– I have submitted an application for a declaration of unconstitutionality of the European regulation regulating the issue of CO2 emission allowances in the ETS system, which was introduced in violation of the principle of unanimity, which guaranteed every country, including Poland, the right of veto in a situation where the solutions directly concern the energy mix and energy security of the state – said the minister.
He argued that these solutions “radically interfere with the energy sector and the entire economy, forcing countries to change their energy mix.” – In the case of Poland, this is particularly drastic, one might say the most drastic measure, because the Polish economy, as everyone knows, largely obtains electricity from burning coal – he recalled.
Ziobro on the ETS system: Poland deprived of the right of veto
He pointed out that the ETS system is designed to “eliminate coal as an electricity source.” – As a result, these European decisions, which were taken without the principle of unanimity and deprived Poland of its veto, have led to radical interference in the Polish energy mix – said Ziobro.
According to him, the functioning of the ETS system “translates into higher prices, an increase in inflation and leads to poverty, limiting Polish competitiveness and the Polish economy.”
– That is why I submit this request to the Constitutional Court, convinced that on the one hand I am defending the rule of law, about which the European Commission talks so much, and that I am violating it (… ). On the other hand, I defend the fundamental interests of Polish families, Polish entrepreneurs and the entire Polish state, which will benefit through much lower energy prices, said the head of the Ministry of Justice.
