Is Poland a province or part of an empire? Krzysztof Rak: There are no miracles

The proposal to transform the EU is the opposite of federalization and is not being implemented. Germany is not fit to be the leader of Europe, says Dr. Krzysztof Rak.

Krzysztof Rak, historian, publicist and author of books, was a guest of Piotr Zychowicz on the channel “Historia realna”. The topic of the conversation included: the European Parliament’s support for proposals for far-reaching changes to the EU treaties.

Professionally involved in, among other things: The German policy journalist said he did not believe in the success of transforming Europe into a centrally governed ‘superstate’.

The opposite of federalization

– Despite the panic in the media, I don’t believe in it, because it is too complicated a process. (…) We can talk about a super state, centralization, but de facto it is about the opposite process of federalization, namely the ultimate destruction of federalization mechanisms in the European Union. If this succeeds, it would mean the collapse of the EU, Rak said.

As he noted, transferring even more power to the strongest European countries, at the expense of medium-sized and weaker countries, will deprive the Union of cohesion and functionality. – We would be dealing with a diktat from the strongest, most populous countries in the EU and the mechanism that would thus be created would be such that the largest countries could use their power ruthlessly – said the historian, adding that this was more appropriate than ‘loss’. of independence” in this case the term “dictate” and the proposal itself was not called a reform, but a “distortion”.

– In my opinion this proposal is unrealistic. The main stakeholder and beneficiary, namely Germany, is powerless. When we look at the government of Olaf Scholz, we can imagine all kinds of things, but not that it will carry out such a complex, multi-year project. They cannot handle the annual budget. We are convinced of the existence of a large, efficient Germany, but it is an increasingly politically weak country, says Krzysztof Rak.

Cancer: Germany is not suitable

Zychowicz asked about voices who claim that Europe, divided into many countries, is unable to compete with world powers and is becoming an open-air museum. Proponents of the vision of centralization of power on the continent argue that from Poland’s point of view it is better to create and be part of a European empire than to be citizens of a provincial country in a declining Europe.

– Theoretically this should be the case, but what would be the practice? (…) If this distortion is implemented, Germany will have the greatest influence on the decisions of this new European empire, because the decision-making process will promote the country with the largest population, he recalled. – At the same time, small and medium-sized countries will be deprived of the ability of the strongest countries to act – said Dr. Rak.

Idiot climate policy

– Let’s look at German policies over the past twenty to thirty years. Ideologically driven climate policy, which is the main cause of Europe’s economic decline. There are no miracles, this country is not fit to be a European leader, he said, adding that Germany is harming itself by pursuing ideological climate policies, especially in light of Russia’s war with Ukraine. The result is terrible electricity prices, so this policy cannot be considered rational, and in the context of the ongoing military conflict it is downright idiotic.

Proposal to amend the EU treaties

This is one of the many changes being implemented in Brussels abandoning the principle of unanimity in EU Council voting in 65 areas. In addition, the project provides for the creation of two new exclusive EU powers – in the field of environmental protection and biodiversity, and also significantly expansion shared powerswhich would cover seven new areas: foreign and security policy, border protection, public health, civil defense, industry and education.

The document was adopted by a small number of votes. It was supported by 291 MEPs, 274 voted against and 44 MEPs abstained. Polish MEPs, from both PiS and PO, voted against changing the treaties. A total of nine Polish MEPs supported the reform of the European Union.
