Tusk on NBP: We will not do anything that would damage Poland’s reputation

In the issue of the NBP, the coalition will not do anything that would undermine the stability and reputation of the Polish state institution – said Donald Tusk, leader of PO.

– It is also our common task to ensure the reputation and stability of institutions in Poland, and the NBP Central Bank is one of the institutions that require exceptional care and attention. And I have no doubt about that, Tusk said during a press conference on Friday.

– We will not do anything that would disrupt stability or undermine the reputation of Polish state institutions in Europe and beyond. Please be calm. This is one of my most important tasks, he added.

Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia, in turn, stated that all “pros and cons” in this matter should be analyzed.

PiS’s request was submitted to the Constitutional Court. In the background there is a dispute over the National Bank of Poland

Today, a group of PiS parliamentarians asked the Constitutional Court to examine the provisions of the State Tribunal law, which allows the NBP president to be brought before the Court of Justice. The group of applicants is represented by MP Krzysztof Szczucki.

The application concerns, among other things: two fragments of the law on the State Tribunal: the suspension of the head of the National Bank of Poland in case of indictment, as well as the provisions on the absolute majority that can put the head of the bank in such a state .

– An absolute majority can, for example, be 116 MPs. So, in effect, the government majority can lead to the suspension of the NBP president. In such a case, there can be no question of central bank independence, Szczucki explained in an interview with Wirtualna Polska.

Tusk’s coalition wants to summon Glapiński to the State Tribunal

Tusk said in November that the coalition of Civic Platform, Poland 2050-Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe (PSL) and New Left was analyzing the issue with a view to bringing the NBP president to the Court of Justice.

The coalition agreement signed on November 10 by the leaders of KO, Poland 2050-PSL and New Left assumes, among other things, that bringing “those responsible for attempts to illegally change the state system” to constitutional responsibility , for violating the constitution and laws and violating the rule of law.

Representatives of the current coalition have announced, among other things, in the media: the possibility of bringing the President of the NBP, Adam Glapiński, under constitutional responsibility and bringing him before the State Tribunal.
