COP28 president opposes demands to phase out fossil fuels

The chairman of the COP28 summit, Sultan Al Jaber, said demands to phase out fossil fuels are not scientifically supported.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres wants to force companies to give up fossil fuels. On Friday, he said during the COP28 climate summit that the use of oil, gas and coal must be completely phased out. As Reuters writes, he emphasized in his speech at the Dubai summit that merely limiting its use will not be enough to halt global warming.

Fossil fuels are among the topics of COP28

A sharp exchange of views on this topic took place during the “She Changes Climate” panel. Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies Sultan Al Jaber referred to the statements of former UN Special Envoy for Climate Change Mary Robinson. The Guardian writes about the case.

Al Jaber, as chairman of the COP28 climate conference, argued that there is no scientific evidence showing that giving up fossil fuels is necessary to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. He added that the gradual withdrawal of fossil fuels is the so-called sustainable development.

Al Jaber: Do you want to return the world to the caves?

Al Jaber referred to Robinson’s claims that he would gain credibility as head of the UAE’s state oil company by taking a possible decision to phase out fossil fuels. He explained that he was only interested in a serious discussion. – I agreed to come to this meeting for a sober and mature conversation. I am in no way endorsing any discussion that is alarmist. There is no science or scenario that says phasing out fossil fuels will allow us to reach 1.5 degrees Celsius, he pointed out.

Robinson argued that his company was investing in increasing fossil fuel extraction in the future. In response, the Arab politician drew attention to the completely one-sided message of the Western media on the issue in question.

– You read your own media, which is biased and wrong. I’m telling you, I’m in charge here. Please help me, show me a map for phasing out fossil fuels that will enable sustainable socio-economic development unless you want to take the world back to the caves, Al Jaber said.

– I don’t think you can help solve the climate problem by pointing fingers or adding to the polarization and division that is already happening in the world. Show me the solutions. Stop pointing fingers; he appealed to advocates of moving away from fossil fuels.
